NEX-7 10fps Shutter Sound vs NEX-5 7fps

Image
We got to play with the Sony Alpha NEX-7 with the black 18-55 mm OSS lens at Unique Photo in Fairfield, NJ so we wanted to test out the new shutter. Here is a video of the NEX-7 shooting in Speed Priority mode at 10 frames per second then in Single Shot mode. Next is the Sony NEX-5 at Single Shot, then at 7 fps. The venue was packed so the shutter sounds are not isolated. As you can hear the NEX-7's shutter sound is much gentler and cleaner than the NEX-5. The NEX-7 had the Front Curtain Shutter option ON. This is similar to the NEX-5N , which may affect the sound slightly, maybe someone with a NEX-5N can clear this up for us. We've read that the difference is barely noticeable. We wish we had more time with the NEX-7. There were a lot of people interested in the 7, 5N, and C3. We will have more posts from our trip at Unique Photo. Thanks Unique Photo and Sony USA.

NEX with Zeiss Tele Superachromat 300mm Lens

Image
NEX with 300mm Tele-Superachromat T* by Kaisern Chen Kaisern Chen posted three images of his Sony NEX -5 and his Carl Zeiss 300mm f/2.8 Tele-Superachromat T* lens made for the Hasselblad 200 Series cameras. Here are some features of the Zeiss Telephoto Power Pack (Zeiss 300mm lens and 1.7x teleconverter): Fastest telephoto lens in professional medium format with an outstanding optical performance. Carl Zeiss teleconverter Apo-Mutar® 1.7x T* and polarizing filter included with the lens. Lens can be focused down to 2.5m – even with the teleconverter in use – thus opening unique creative opportunities. The Zeiss 300mm was adapted to the NEX via a Hasselblad V mount to Canon EOS adapter then an EOS to Sony E-mount adapter . Unfortunately there are not sample images yet from the combo. Read more about the NEX and the Carl Zeiss Tele-Superachromat T* 2.8/300 lens at Kaisern Chen's blog . Thanks K.C.!

Sony NEX-5N vs NEX-5 Spec Comparison

Sony NEX-5N vs NEX-5 Spec Comparison Let's compare the specs of the new Sony NEX-5N to the one that started it all, the NEX-5. The form is slightly slimmer but Sony kept the shape very familiar. Now let's see what the new functions are of the NEX-5N. Availability Sony NEX-5N Kit: September 7, 2011 $699 . Sony NEX-5: July 2010. Sony NEX Macro Extension Tubes Samples

Image
Sony NEX Macro Extension Tubes with 40mm Rokkor-M Lens Here are some sample shots using the Sony NEX E-mount macro extension tubes and some Rokkor-M lenses. The tubes contain no optical elements. They move the lens further away from the NEX's APS-C sensor therefore reducing the focusing distance and increasing magnification. The trade off to extension tubes are that more light is needed, which can be compensated with slow shutter speeds or high ISO. The shots below were handheld in bright daylight which is not ideal for macro shots. A walk around a small park with the NEX-5 , tubes, and the 40mm Rokkor-M gives us a different perspective. This fruit below is still unknown to us and was already interesting but at 100% zoom, a small community of insects makes it even more interesting. 100% Zoom on Image Sony NEX E-mount Extension Tubes Here are more samples from the 40mm Rokkor-M lens at f/8 or f/11 at high ISO. Sony NEX-5N with Electronic Viewfinder

Image
Sony NEX-5N Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) Here is the first image of the new electronic viewfinder (EVF) on the upcoming Sony NEX-5N camera. Press the button on the NEX-5N EVF and choose between the EVF or the rear LCD for shooting. The battery life should last longer by using the EVF instead of the rear LCD. The NEX-5N EVF reportedly can be tilted for different shooting angles. We are hoping that this is backwards compatible for the NEX-3 and NEX-5 cameras. We also have no information if this will work on the NEX-C3 . What are your thoughts on the NEX-5N EVF? Here was our first NEX-5N post . Thanks eddieaus!

Sony NEX-C3 vs NEX-5 Red Shift Battle

Image
Sony NEX-C3 vs NEX-5 Sample 1 bigpen from xitek forums was lucky enough to have the new NEX-C3 and the NEX-5 for a red shift battle. The red shift, vignetting, and / or discoloration is caused by wide angle rangefinder lenses (28mm or less) on the NEX. The light rays from the wide angle lens hit the edges of the NEX sensor at extreme angles since the lens' rear element is so close to the NEX sensor. The comparison was done with a lens adapter and the Contax G 21mm Rangefinder lens, which is known to produce the red shift on the NEX-5 and NEX-3. It looks like the Sony engineers know of the red shift and has addressed the issue with the new NEX-C3. The 16.2 mp sensor of the NEX-C3 seems to handle the light from problematic lenses in a different way - better. The NEX-C3 samples are the ones on top in each set. But don't worry, the red shift, vignetting, and / or discoloration can be fixed in post processing by using CornerFix . The same issue exists for the Leic

The New Sony NEX-5N?

Image
The New Sony NEX-5N? A member of the xitek.com forums, stevenyu123, has posted pictures of what could be the new Sony NEX-5N. The NEX-5N surfaced for a new Sony commercial which is being filmed in China. We can see that the Flash marking on the wheel seems to be gone and that there is an extra button on the top panel, to the right of the Movie button. Sony may have relocated the Playback button. A Scene From the NEX-5N Commercial Thanks stevenyu123 !

NEX Intervalometer via MP3 Player

Image
A Russian blog, habrahabr.ru, has posted an very interesting DIY intervalometer remote for the Sony NEX-5. The intervalometer uses an MP3 player which has an infrared dongle to transmit the shutter command for the NEX-5. Remember that only the NEX-5 , which has an IR receiver, can use a remote to control the shutter. You can then modify the MP3 file to create an intervalometer out of the MP3 player by adding gaps between the shutter release signal. Create an IR transmitter for your MP3 player. Set the NEX-5 to remote shutter mode. Play the MP3 file and the shutter of the NEX fires. We have not tested it. Check out habrahabr.ru for full instructions. MP3 Player with Infrared Transmitter

NEX Tips and Tricks for Filmmakers

Image
Here is Adam Roberts' tips and tricks on using the NEX-5 for film making. He discusses setting up the soft keys to help in creating videos. He then goes through the custom white balance setting. He used a very flat setting for the videos, reduced contrast, reduced saturation, and reduced sharpness, which was changed through the NEX's Creative Style menu. After the NEX-5 settings, he discusses the hardware he used. He quickly talks about lens adapters, third party lenses, Lensbaby Tilt Transformer , and follow focus. NEX-5 with Shoot35 Follow Focus The last part of the video is on video workflow. Adam R. used AVCHD (.MTS) to film with the NEX-5. The files (.MTS) were then converted to quicktime files (.MOV) by using ClipWrap before using Final Cut Pro to do the final edit. Here is "Another Yesterday" by Adam Roberts using the tips and tricks in the video above. Thanks Adam R and for the tip Anon on 6/21!

NEX Zeiss 24mm and the 2011 E-mount Lenses

Image
Upcoming 2011 Sony NEX E-mount Lenses Knight Like the Wind Child from Xitek Forums posted a picture of a slide from a recent Sony presentation in China. The slide shows the updated NEX lens roadmap with the newest E-mount lenses to be released this year. We posted the roadmap back in February and it has changed considerably. First the 30mm is now clearly defined as the Sony NEX 30mm f/3.5 Macro Lens with a 1:1 reproduction ratio. The SEL30M35 lens will be sold at a price of $250 and will be available in September. We have more info here . Second, the most awaited NEX lens, the Carl Zeiss 24mm in native E-mount is now closer to reality with the maximum aperture of f/2 being defined. The lens looks to be a bit shorter than what was shown in the February lens roadmap. We are in favor of lighter and more compact lenses to keep with the NEX system's main advantage over DSLRs. 36mm FOV on the NEX is nearly the perfect normal / wide angle view for most photographers. Third is tha

Sony HVL-F20S Flash for NEX Cameras

Image
Sony HVL-F20S Flash Sony NEX HVL-F20S Flash avaiable now. With the announcement of the Sony NEX-C3 comes a new accessory flash for the NEX cameras. The new Sony HVL-F20S flash is a larger, more powerful flash for the NEX system. The Guide Number of 20 (50mm, at ISO 100) is a considerable increase from the GN7 (in metres at ISO 100) of the basic external flash (Sony HVL-F7S) provided with the NEX-C3, NEX-3, and the NEX-5. The new HVL-F20S also has an adjustable head to provide flash bouncing abilities. The new flash, as with the old flash, draws power from the NEX's camera's battery - just clip it and go. It is scheduled to be released in the summer. From the Sony press release: Also available as an option, the new HVL-F20S is a style-matching flash that clips onto the camera’s Smart Accessory Terminal. Powered directly by the camera, the flash requires no batteries, achieving an ultra-compact size and light weight when you're travelling. With a generous GN20 (50mm, a

Sony NEX SLR Magic Noktor 50mm Lens

Image
Here is the SLR Magic x Noktor HyperPrime 50mm F0.95 for the Sony NEX E-mounhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gift. That is correct the maximum aperture is 0.95 similar to that of the very rare Leica 50mm Noctilux-M priced at $10,495. The Noktor is priced at $1000 which is very close to the Voigtlander 50mm f/1.1 Nokton . This fully manual lens, with an FOV of 75mm on the NEX, will allow plenty of light onto the sensor for low light shooting. We are waiting for sample photos to see how this lens from the new Noktor company performs, recently acquired by SLR Magic. For more information check out Noktor.com .

Tempus NEX Sony NEX Intervalometer Remote

Image
Here is the Tempus NEX, an intervalometer infrared remote for Sony Alpha cameras including the NEX. The Tempus NEX was created by bymac.org and will be available on June 15th according to the Tempus NEX website . The Tempus NEX will cost $69, we're not sure if that includes worldwide shipping, it is being made in Portugal. Send an email to tempus@bymac.org if you are interested in this intervalometer for time lapse movies. Here is a sample time lapse movie by bymac.org made with the Tempus NEX and a Sony NEX-5 . The Tempus NEX will work with Sony Alpha cameras with IR remote receivers, e.g. A900 and SLT-A55. Unfortunately the NEX-5 does not go into sleep mode when it is in Remote Shutter mode. The screen will be on and draining the battery while waiting for the IR signal. Have extra batteries ready when doing intervalometer shots. We are hoping that the next firmware will allow us to turn off the screen as an option.

NEX with Minolta 90mm Rokkor-M Lens Test

Image
Sony NEX-5 with Minolta 90mm Rokkor-M Lens Here is a quick lens test of the Minolta 90mm f/4 Rokkor-M on the Sony NEX-5. In 1981 Minolta announced the Minolta CLE, the most advance Leica-M camera until the release of the Leica M7 in 2001. Minolta updated the Leica 90mm Elmar-C to produce the 90mm Rokkor-M for the CLE. The 90mm Rokkor-M is very light and small for a telephoto lens which is perfect for the Sony NEX system. The lens is mounted to the NEX using a Leica M to E-mount lens adapter . The lens produces an equivalent field of view of 135mm when used with the NEX's APS-C sensor. This makes for a capable portrait lens. The samples below are JPGs straight from the camera with very minor tweaks and resized before posting. The Sony NEX-5 was placed on a table and a remote trigger was used to avoid shaking. The ISO was set at 200 and Aperture Priority mode was used. Image 1. Minolta 90mm Rokkor-M at f/4. Image 2. 100% Crop of Image 1 Lower Left. Image 3. 100% Crop of Imag

Holga Wide Lens for Sony NEX Cameras

Image
It looks like Holga is joining the Sony E-mount system. They are producing a very inexpensive plastice lens with a native Sony NEX E-mount. It is a 25mm focal length lens (37.5mm FOV for the NEX cameras ) with a fixed aperture of f/8. It is a zone focus lens, practice telling distances at 0.7, 2, 6, and 10+ meters (2.3, 7, 20, and 33 feet) in order to focus. These are the distances you can select with the focus ring. The official Holga part number is HL(W)-SN. The images and information is from Buy The Goods of eBay fame. The Holga Wide Lens for the Sony NEX recently went for $19.75 shipped from Buy The Goods and sold out. In order to combat this Sony will be releasing the Firmware Version 04 with a Toy Camera filter effect.

Sony NEX-5 with Contax Zeiss Distagon and Planar

Image
Here are my dream slr lenses on the Sony NEX-5. They are Carl Zeiss lenses made for the Contax SLR system. These lenses are on par with the modern Carl Zeiss lenses for Sony/Minolta, Pentax, Canon, and Nikon at a very reasonable price. All the lenses were previously used on a Canon DSLR via a Contax / Yashica to Canon EOS adapter. They were mounted on the Sony NEX-5 using an EOS to NEX E-mount adapter . The direct way would be to use a Contax/Yashica to NEX E-mount lens adapter . Here are the lenses mounted on the NEX and sample snap shots at wide open aperture and stopped down at f/5.6. These images are straight jpgs out of the NEX-5. The first lens is the Contax Zeiss 28mm Distagon with a maximum aperture of f/2.8. This is a great landscape lens at a bargain. Sony NEX with Contax Zeiss 28mm f/2.8 Distagon Contax 28mm Distagon at f/2.8 Contax 28mm Distagon at f/5.6 The second lens is the Contax Zeiss 50mm Planar with a maximum aperture of f/1.4.
